Understanding VELCRO® Brand Backings: sewn-on, pressure sensitive adhesive, or heat sealable/RF welded coating

Posted on Wed, Dec 09, 2015

There are a wide variety of methods used to attach VELCRO® Brand Hook and Loop fasteners to a product. The method depends on the substrate and how the product will be used. Here's a quick guide:

Sewn-On
Fabric-backed hook and loop are sewn to textiles and fabrics. These are made with materials such as nylon and polyester. Different fabrics are used for varying degrees of durability (hold strength), moisture conditions and tear resistance.

Pressure Sensitive Adhesive

Pressure sensitive adhesives are popular because of the ease of application. Simply remove the release liner and press the VELCRO® Brand tape in place. Pressure sensitive adhesives should always be considered semi-permanent bonds. VELCRO® Brand pressure sensitive adhesives have been engineered to offer specific performance characteristics to meet different requirements.

RF Weldable

VELCRO® Brand RF weldable hook products eliminate the need for heat-activated adhesive and help reduce manufacturing complexity and costs. Loop 3607 has a virgin vinyl film laminated to its back, eliminating the need for adhesives and solvents. Loop 3609 is combined with an RF-sealable urethane backing for applications requiring softness and flexibility such as orthopedic bracing.

Heat- and Solvent-Activated

Solvent and heat activated adhesives, available on most VELCRO® Brand hook and loop tapes, provide the strongest bond to the tape itself and can be made ready for instant bonding by many easy methods of application (e.g. solvent, heat, ultrasonic, dielectric).
