What is prototyping in manufacturing?
In a broader sense, prototype manufacturing refers to engineers building preliminary versions of a part or product. These versions are used to test fit, function, and material performance before committing to production volumes. The 3D printing guides that surface in search results address one slice of that definition. For adhesive tape and fastener applications, prototyping means something more specific. It refers to die-cutting a pressure-sensitive tape to a particular geometry, laminating several layers to test bond strength under load, or producing a short run of VELCRO® Brand reclosable fasteners configured for a defined assembly.

Our prototyping and rapid sampling process
We don't jump straight to cutting material. Before anything ships, we spend time on the application itself. We understand what substrates are involved, what environmental conditions the bond will face, and what mechanical or thermal stresses apply. Our process of review will pick up any issues with material selection, adhesion chemistry, or dimensional tolerances before tooling is committed. We also review the application process, how will the part be used and applied, are there ways we can design the part to make the process more efficient.
A typical prototyping process follows this sequence:
- Application review: Your engineering team shares drawings, specs, or a description of the problem as well as how this part will be applied during production. We review the application and suggest materials based on substrate compatibility, environmental exposure, and performance targets. Suggestions may also be made for changes in the part design to facilitate application in your production line or at the end user.
- Material selection” We source the appropriate materials such as pressure-sensitive tapes, double-sided tapes, VHB (Very High Bond) tapes, specialty foam tapes, medical-grade adhesives, or VELCRO® Brand products. We confirm availability for both prototype and production quantities, because we want a material that works in a sample and that will be available for the scheduled production run.
- Sample production: Sample parts are produced using the appropriate converting processes (die-cutting, laser cutting, laminating, precision slitting). We can also supply a sample roll or representative material for evaluation.
- Testing and iteration: Your team tests the samples in your actual application environment. If something needs adjusting, we iterate until the part does what it needs to do.
- Production handoff: Once approved, the same facility, and team that built your prototypes handle the production order. Tooling, material sourcing, and process parameters can carry over without re-qualification.
It is important to note that requirements for labeling, barcoding, and kitting need to be defined at the quoting stage. Establishing this early will help maintain your project schedule.
